Takeyoshi Mitsui, born in 1987, is a glass artist based in Toyama, Japan. After graduating from Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts, he trained at the Toyama Glass Studio before establishing his independent practice in 2016. His work is marked by refined glassblowing techniques and a distinctive command of color—expressive yet restrained, bold yet nuanced. His Silence series, first presented in 2015, received the U35 Award at the Japan Crafts Exhibition in 2017, signaling the emergence of a singular voice in contemporary Japanese glass.

At the heart of Mitsui’s practice is a deep sensitivity to atmosphere—the subtle presence or “air” that a work emits beyond its physical form. He views each vessel as possessing its own quiet dignity, much like the aura of a person. Rather than focusing solely on external shape, he seeks to articulate the intangible: the mood, stillness, and emotional weight that reside within and around the object.

His recent works explore the coexistence of vibrancy and stillness. While embracing vivid, polychromatic palettes, Mitsui avoids superficial exuberance. Instead, he carefully composes linear silhouettes and varies the thickness of the glass at the mouth and base, introducing sharpness and rhythm to the form. The surface is finished with meticulously incised lines—no more than one millimeter wide—which temper the visual intensity of the colors. Through this delicate synthesis of structure, color, and texture, his vessels embody a poised and contemplative presence: objects that speak softly, even when rendered in brilliant hues.
