Haeinyo's Baekja is a contemporary ceramic based on Joseon white porcelain. The color of Joseon white porcelain, which is loved around the world, is white and blue, like a very pale shadow of light. Depending on the amount of light and the space, Joseon white porcelain has many colors, including white, blue, gray, and light yellow. The white soil that has been purified several times is pure and clean like the surface of an egg. However, Haeinyo's Baekja produces this marvelous color when the iron oxide originally in the soil meets the appropriate temperature of fire. He aims to create a natural form of white porcelain that is closest to its essence rather than flashy decorations. So, instead of adding decorations, he focuses on wheel throwing with the mindset of emptying and simplifying. Haeinyo's representative works, led by Kim Sang In, include plum blossom patterns symbolizing Korean aesthetics, quilted clothing patterns, and the most minimalistic decorations symbolizing the four seasons. Works such as the rectangular plate inspired by Dadimi, which was used to clean laundry, and the tall Gojok plate that was used on tables at large parties, show Korean culture that is familiar to us but often forgotten in modern society.
