■ 전시 서문
갤러리LVS & CRAFT(이하 LVS)는2013년 현대 백자 1세대를 일컫는 ‘백중백 White in White’ 전시를 시작으로 대한민국 명장의 백자를 포함하여 넓은 스펙트럼의 한국 도자예술을 런던 콜렉트에서 선보여 왔다. 올해로 8회 째 참여하는 2020년 런던 콜렉트에서는 달 항아리 작가 4명(권대섭, 이용순, 김익영, 문평), 국가 무형 문화재 2명(김춘식, 서신정), 한국 컨템포러리 아티스트 6명(이정원, 김덕호, 이인화, 이강효, 박주형, 장연순)을 한자리에 소개한다.
17세기부터 시작된 달 항아리는 큰 크기로 위아래가 따로 제작되어 가운데서 흙물로 이어지며, 그 둥그런 모양이 보름달을 닮았다 하여 달 항아리라 불린다. 갤러리 LVS & Craft는 일제강점기 이후에 끊겼던 도예문화를 다시 이끌어낸 대한민국 1세대 김익영 도예가부터 흙에 소금을 섞음으로써 자기만의 텍스처를 만들어낸 문평 도예가의 작품까지 선보이며, 이번 2020 COLLECT에서 한국 현대 달 항아리의 역사를 압축적으로 소개하고자 한다.
또한, Gallery LVS & Craft는 한국 컨템포러리 도예가와 공예작가들의 작품을 달 항아리와 함께 배치함으로써, 달 항아리의 온화함과 부드러운 곡선의 미가 어떻게 현대적 감각으로 확장되고 해석되었는지를 보여주고자 한다. 자연의 즉흥성을 담아낸 이강효 작가와 빛의 투광도를 연구하는 이정원 작가들의 작업은 달 항아리의 온화함과 맞닿으며, 불교의 원을 재해석하는 장연순 작가와 기형의 아름다움을 만들어내는 박주형 작가의 작품은 현대적 감각으로의 확장된 곡선의 미를 보여준다.
이리하여, Gallery LVS & Craft는 2020년 2월 서머셋 하우스에서(Somerset House)에서 개최하는 2020 COLLECT를 통해 전 세계에서 온 방문객들과 컬렉터들에게 작품만이 아닌 사람, 그 과정과 재료 그리고 아이디어에 대해 시각적 지표를 제시하고자 한다.
■ Exhibition Statement
Started from London Collect 2013, Gallery LVS & CRAFT have shared highlights of Korean contemporary porcelain and craft artists in London. At this year’s London Collect 2020, Gallery LVS & Craft are pleased to introduce 4 Moon Jar artists (Dae Sup Kwon, Yong Soon Lee, Yikyung Kim, Pyung Mun), 2 artists designated as Korean intangible cultural Properties (Chun Sik Kim, Sin Jeong Seo), and 6 Korean contemporary craft artists (Jeung Won Lee, Deok Ho Kim, In Hwa Lee, Kang Hyo Lee, Juhyung Park, Yeon Soon Chang).
Moon Jars started emerging in 17th century Joseon Dynasty, a Korean dynastic Kingdom. Because large vessels that cannot be created in one pottery, Moon Jars’ upper and lower parts are produced separately and combined in the middle. Whitish color and round form of finished works resemble a full moon, and they became to be named “Moon Jar”. In London Collect 2020, Gallery LVS & Craft look forward to visually present compressed history of Korean contemporary Moon Jar. The exhibition includes Yikyung Kim who is a 1st generation of Korean contemporary Moon Jar artist revived Moon Jar history after Japanese Colonial era, to Pyung Mun who created his own unique texture through mixing salt and soil.
Gallery LVS & Craft also extend this exhibition through collaborating with Korean contemporary craft works. Bringing in Moon Jars and Korean contemporary crafts into this exhibition visually present how the simplicity and roundness of Moon Jars have transcended and expanded in different medium. The simplicity of Moon jars echo with Kang Hyo Lee and Jeung Won Lee’s works that explore improvisational quality of nature and transmittance of light, respectively. Also, Yeon soon Chang’s fiber works that inspired from the circles in Buddhism and Juhyung Park’s organic formed metal works re-investigate the beauty of roundness into contemporary sense.
London Collect 2020 will be open on February 27th to March 1st at Somerset House, UK. In this exhibition, Gallery LVS & Craft are looking forward to not only introduce Korean artworks and artists but also exchange the history and ideas in order to suggest new visual directions.
