Gallery LVS will hold a solo exhibition of Jun Won Kun 'Colors on colors' from September 5 to 28, 2019.
s his fifth solo exhibition at Gallery LVS, he presents monochromatic paintings that take a leap forward from his previous work in more diverse directions for the first time in two years since his 2017 solo exhibition ‘Relax’.

Dansaekhwa(monochromatic paintings) can be said to be the accumulation of traces of repetitive action, that is, practice to maximize the depth of monochromatic colors. Jun Won Kun has also been studying color along with the study of planes on the line, and he has put infinite depth in it for a long time.

Just as a single color is revealed through the combination of multiple colors and the light of multiple colors is gathered to form a deep white light, the white plane of the power root is actually a product of multiple layers. The spot of the dripping paint on the side of the work suggests that many colors were placed, overlapped, and polished several times to produce this deep white color.

Jun Won Kun goes through a repetitive process of applying diluted acrylic paint on the canvas and wiping it off. Based on this production process, while continuously realizing a monochromatic plane, he has consistently presented various possibilities through works that include rectangles, circles, vertical lines, and horizontal lines.

The work progresses from a dark light to a dimly bright light, as if forming a gradation from top to bottom. The feature of this work is that the brush marks that were buried in the previous work are revealed. This brush mark, which the artist calls handwriting, is not the force that we usually think of as strongly drawn down, but a place where the action of a calm and inner force exists.

If his previous works gave viewers a sense of infinite depth and an endless sense of space due to the overlapping of multiple colors, you can feel that the new work shown in this exhibition draws out the strength he has and brings out a strong stillness. In addition, the gradation allows you to feel the overlap of multiple colors that could only be inferred from the side, providing a moment where the audience can fully enjoy the title of the exhibition, “Colors on colors”

It will be a meaningful place to newly present the power of the artist's craftsman-like training and long-term research to realize color beyond color, and the vague sense of space and depth hidden in paintings until now.

Jun Won Kun was born in Seoul in 1970, graduated from Chugye University of Arts, and obtained Meister Schiele from the German National Düsseldorf Kunst Academy under Helmut Federle. He currently lives and works in Dusseldorf.
