가산 이용순 Gasan Lee Yongsoon
가산 이용순의 달항아리는 오리지널 조선 달 항아리 그대로를 옮겨놓은 그 자체로 본다. 어릴 적부터 백자의 간결하고 고운 멋을 동경해왔고, 열아홉 살에 전문적으로 도예에 입문했다. 스승이 도자 수리 전문이었으므로 자연스럽게 골동품 백자와 고미술품을 수리하고 복원하는 일에 집중해왔다.
깨지고 망가진 옛 것들을 오랜 시간 복원해오면서, 그는 언제나 어릴 적 마음에 품고 있던 나만의 대작을 만드는 꿈을 떠올렸다. 그리하여 현대 도예로서의 달 항아리, 작가 이용순으로서 대작을 위한 연구를 시작했다. 언제나 동경하던 달 항아리의 형상을 빚으며, 오랫동안 고쳐왔던 수많은 골동품 도자기를 떠올렸다. 누가 보아도 가장 아름답고 완벽한 달 항아리는 조선시대의 짧은 기간 동안 크게 발전했던 오리지널 달 항아리라는 생각이 옳았다. 조선의 달 항아리를 그대로 재현한다면, 꿈에 그려온 대작을 이루는 것이라는 강한 믿음이 그를 달 항아리 장인의 길로 이끌었다.
이용순의 달 항아리가 조선 시대의 달 항아리 그 자체로 볼 수 있는 이유는 15세기의 제작 방식을 그대로 차용했다는 것이다. 백토의 원재료인 백색의 돌을 동굴 깊숙한 곳에서 캐서, 등 가득히 지고 내려오는 첫 번째 과정부터가 쉽지 않다. 그러나 쉬지 않고 바로 흙을 만드는 두 번째 과정을 시작한다. 돌을 부수어 고운 가루로 만든 후 맑은 물에 개어 수없이 반죽하면 희고 보드라운 점토가 된다. 흙부터 유약, 장작 가마까지 이용순의 달 항아리의 원천인 모든 것은 자연으로부터, 그의 손을 거쳐 만들어진다.
달 항아리는 고고한 선비의 자태를 보는 듯 초연하고 흔들림이 없다. 이용순은 자신의 달 항아리에 우리 선조들의 것이 그랬듯이, 비대칭과 규칙을 넘나드는 곡선이 주는 아름다움을 담았다. 그의 달 항아리는 모든 면에서 보는 형태와 빛깔이 조금씩 달라 마치 진경산수를 보는 듯한 신비로운 모습으로 다가온다. 이렇게 사면이 다른 형태는 작가가 가장 잘 알고 있는 조선의 달 항아리의 곡선을 구상하며 의도를 가지고 표현되었다. 정형을 벗어났지만 오히려 더 완벽한 형태에 도달한 이용순의 달 항아리는 조선시대의 절제된 순수한 멋을 떠올리게 한다.

Gasan Lee Yongsoon's moon jar is believed to be the original Joseon Dynasty moon jar itself. Since he was young, he loved the simple and elegant beauty of white porcelain, so he began learning ceramic professionally at the age of 19.
His teacher was an old antique ceramics restorer, so he naturally devoted a long time to restoring antique ceramics. He has been restoring broken and damaged ceramic jars for a long time. Then, he started thinking about the dream he had harbored ever since he was a child when he first became fascinated with ceramics.
It was about creating my own masterpiece. So, He began his career as a modern ceramic artist. He began shaping the moon jar, which was his favorite among the many jars he had repaired.
The most beautiful and perfect moon jar was the Joseon Dynasty moon jar, which was only made for 1-2 centuries. He had a strong belief that if he could make the Joseon moon jar exactly, he would achieve the masterpiece he had dreamed of.
Lee’s moon jar follows the 15th century method. Instead of purchasing white stones, which are the ingredients for white clay, he go to caves in the mountains and pick out good stones.
When he carry it and come down, he immediately create clay. Crush the stones into fine powder, then mix with water and knead. Once the unique white clay is created, it is made by putting glaze developed by him and firing it in a wooden kiln. This course is valuable because it follows old methods rather than modern ones. Therefore, the features such as small dots and blue light coming from natural clay are most similar to ancient moon jars.
The moon jar is a representative piece of Korean art and gives the feeling of looking at a clean heart in the shape of the moon. He had always observed and admired the Joseon moon jar at the museum, and finally created a curve that most closely resembled it.
His moon jar looks round from a distance, but when you look up close, all sides are slightly different.
This is not a perfect sphere shape, but shows slightly different curves depending on the angle, and can be seen as a more perfect handmade piece.
