갤러리 LVS(신사동)는 2022년 첫 전시로 2월 17일부터 3월 30일까지 신진작가 이소나 개인전 ‘LEEWAY'를 개최한다. 작가 이소나는 건국대 현대 미술과를 졸업하고 지난해 ASYAAF 청년 아트페어로 등단하여 발굴된 신진작가로, 빛과 색으로 점철된 배경 속에 오롯이 서있는 대상만을 남겨 여유와 평온의 시공간을 표현한다. 전시명 ’LEEWAY'는 원하는 만큼의 자유, 대상의 한계 안에서 본인의 의지대로 이룰 수 있는 최대한의 자유를 의미한다.
작품에 등장하는 대상은 어떠한 은유나 상징성을 띠지 않는 평범한 일상 속의 개인, 군상, 사물로 나타난다. 어디에나 있고, 언제나 스쳐가는 보통의 존재들은 ‘나’를 둘러싼 일상이자 배경에 지나지 않지만, 캔버스로 이들을 옮겨오는 과정에서 물리적 배경을 생략함으로써 이들은 배경으로서의 타인이 아닌 비로소 온전한 삶의 주인공 ‘나’를 되찾게 된다.
‘LEEWAY'는 내가 원하는 ’나‘를 찾아가는 여정이다. ’나‘는 본능적으로 행복과 안정을 추구하는 자아임과 동시에 톱니바퀴처럼 맞물린 수많은 현대인 역할 중 하나를 짊어진 두 자아로 살아간다. 두 자아의 공존이 오래되어 익숙해져도 어떤 삶이 진정 나를 위하는 삶인지에 대해 명확히 할 수 없는 순간이 있다. 창작자는 그러한 대상을 따스한 시선으로 캔버스 위로 인도하고자 하며, 탄생부터 한 순간도 멈추지 않았던 소음과 시계초침을 멈춘 공간으로 길을 내어준다. 그 곳에는 오로지 빛과 색만 있다.
유토피아의 어원은 ‘없는 곳’와 ‘좋은 곳’의 결합으로 출발하여 존재하지 않는 낙원, 누구나 행복과 쾌락을 즐길 수 있는 세상은 물리적으로 존재하지 않음을 반증한다. 그럼에도 누구도 가지 못한 유토피아는 묘사를 통해 계속 존재해왔다. 삶을 영위하고 문제를 해결하는 일은 늘 간단하지 않고, 외면과 도피의 욕구 또한 삶의 부분이기 때문에 창작자는 현실로부터 잠시 벗어난 대상들을 위로하는 평온의 종착지로서 그들만의 색깔로 이루어진 유토피아적 공간을 선사한다. 진공 상태의 우주와도 같은 이 공간에는 대상만이 그림자를 가진 명확한 주체로 그려지며 그 외에는 형체가 확실하지 않다. 마치 모든 생각과 판단의 의무로부터 벗어나 비로소 진정한 자유와 안정을 찾고자하는 대상, 즉 ‘나’로 정의되고자하는, ‘나’만이 존재하는 유토피아 ‘LEEWAY' 로 초대된 것이다.

현대사회를 살다보면 현실에서 벗어나고 싶을 때가 있다. 잘 살아가야 한다는 것에 대한 부담감, 사회적인 문제들을 직면 할때 얻는 스트레스, 이러한 복잡한 현실을 뒤로하고 도피 하고 싶은 욕구가 넘친다. 그러한 모든 부정적인 것들에게서 벗어나 여유를 갖고 자신을 돌볼 수 있는 시간이 필요하다. 자신이 원하는 것에 집중하고 현재 느끼는 감정에 몰입하고 누리고 싶은 것을 누릴 수 있는 자유가 필요하다.
나의 작업은 주변을 관찰하며 나의 주관적인 시선으로 바라본 대상에게 자유의 공간을 만들어준다. 그들에게서 느껴지는 감정에 집중하여 그들만의 공간을 만든다. 평범한 일상을 특별하게 만들면서 근심과 무질서가 존재하지 않는, 또한 바쁜 시간의 흐름을 느낄 수 없는 이상적인 세계를 창조한다. Leeway를 부여하면서 그들의 모습은 현실과 이상세계를 아우르는 유토피아적인 공간과 결합시킨 새로운 이야기로 관찰된다. 영원하고 지속적인 느낌을 주는 공간에 놓인 인물들은 평온하고 고요한 배경과 조화를 이루며 서있다.

Gallery LVS holds a solo exhibition of Lee Sona, the rising artist, from February 17 to March 30. Lee Sona, a graduate from Konkuk University with a BA in Contemporary Art, was discovered at ASYAAF, and her works focus on expressing tranquility by presenting the subject in a space that is formed only with gradating light and color. The exhibition title "LEEWAY" expresses the infinite freedom one might need and the freedom to achieve anything within the maximum limits.
The subjects in the paintings appear to be ordinary individuals, a normal group of people without carrying any metaphors or symbolic meanings. The ubiquitous beings are just mere beings in our daily lives but once they are painted onto the canvas, the dynamic of its physical meanings in life changes and is accentuated individually. Moreover, the artist furthers out by omitting all the details in the background, letting the subject become the focus. The individuals who were just passersby in our daily lives has now become the main character in life.
“LEEWAY” is a journey to find me. “I” am both instinctively seeking happiness and stability but also have another ego within that carries the responsibilities as one of the many neoteric beings that are interlocked like cogwheels. Being in between two different egos for a long can get confusing with the coexistence of two egos, there come moments when one cannot be clear of which life is for the better. Lee Sona helps to guide through, leading the path of silenced noises and frozen time drawn on her canvas, to halt it all which started from birth; there is only light and color.
The etymology of utopia starts with the combination of "no place" and "good place" and disproves that there is no physical world in which anyone can enjoy happiness and pleasure. Nevertheless, utopia, which no one could go to, has continued to exist through descriptions. It is not always simple to lead a life and live through problems, and the desire to escape is also a part of life, so the artist provides a utopian space only made of color as a final destination of tranquility that has helps to briefly deviate from reality. In this vacuum state of space, only subjects are distinctly drawn on with shadows, and everything else is quite indistinguishable. It is the invitation to the utopia "LEEWAY," where only "I" exists, defined as "me," which seeks to find true freedom and stability after breaking away from all the obligations of thought and judgment.
